The building was completed in 1917.
The architects behind this monumental edifice were Andreas Bjercke and Georg Eliassen. The building has four storeys and is built of bricks, partly clad with quarried Iddefjord granite.
The low towers at each corner enhance the building’s castle like appearance. Inside the main entrance are frescoes by Per Krogh with motifs taken from the zodiac. From the Sjømannskolen there is a fantastic view of Nesodden, Bærum and much of central and western Oslo and the Oslofjord.
Close to the building, in the grounds, lies the oldest cultural heritage site in Oslo. These are rock carvings which are believed to be about 6,000 years old. Some of the oldest traces of human habitation in Oslo have also been found in the area.
The Sjømannskolen is idyllically located, but also central. It is only 5 minutes from the city centre by car and there is a tram stop right outside. The woods which cover the whole of Ekebergåsen offer many opportunities for walks, starting right outside the building.
